What is Reiki?

Reiki is a form of energy medicine that originated in Japan. Reiki is based on the idea that there is a life force energy flowing through and around us nourishing our physical and energetic bodies. When a person’s body and mind are in a positive state of mind, this energy is strong, free-flowing and in harmony. However, there are times in our lives when our energy is low, imbalanced, or restricted by stress, injury, illness, or environmental factors.

This can cause blocks that obstruct the vital flow of energy through our body and systems that is necessary for our health and well being. Over time this leads to illness and depleted mental and emotional reserves while making us more susceptible to discomfort, further illness and disease.

Reiki can help restore and balance the flow of energy so that one is able to feel relaxed allowing the body’s own innate healing abilities to work fully.

Reiki is transmitted through a practitioner, who acts as a channel and must be trained and attuned to that energy. A Reiki practitioner can be looked at as an anchor on the physical plane who is able to bring through certain frequencies of energy for the benefit of themselves and other people. They’re a gateway to helping others restore their own well being.

Since energy is not limited by distance, the recipient does not have to be physically present during a session. The effects of a remote Reiki healing are similar to sessions done in person. The benefits of a remote session may be better for some because they are more comfortable in their own space and open to receiving. Most Reiki practitioners have clients located in many different areas and can send healing energy to people or animals all over the world.

  • Reiki is not a substitute for traditional medical treatment, it is the perfect companion and enhances overall well-being. It can provide relief for anyone looking for a way to deal with the emotional stress of a cancer diagnosis.

  • An in-person Reiki session begins with a conversation to discuss how you’re feeling, any primary health concerns, anything you’d like to focus on physically, emotionally or spiritually and to set an intention for your treatment. You will then lie down on a massage table, fully clothed. I begin the treatment with a scan of the body to determine if any chakras (energy centers) are closed. The goal is to have all of the chakras open. During the treatment, I will gently place my hands, palms down above or directly on the energy centers of the body avoiding all sensitive body parts allowing the Reiki energy to flow.

    Each session can vary as to what you might experience. Many people become so relaxed they fall asleep during the treatment. Some sessions you might experience tingling throughout the body, vibrational buzzing, heat from the various hand positions, visions, vivid colors or hear intuitive messages. And other sessions you may not experience anything and are deeply relaxed. If you don’t experience anything or have a “fireworks” session it doesn’t mean it’s not working. Reiki is an intelligent energy that gives you exactly what you need in that moment. In fact, your own energetic body is in control of how much Reiki it wants or needs during a session and utilizes it accordingly.

  • Reiki restores you to a natural state of balance by unlocking your body’s natural healing abilities. It directly influences your central nervous system by allowing you to relax. When in that state physical, mental, emotional and spiritual healing takes place. Many people feel deeply relaxed and have a strong sense of peace. An almost immediate release of stress. They also report feeling refreshed, lighter, happier, motivated, more clarity and less physical pain. Like a weight has been lifted off their shoulders. During a session layers of “stuck” energy are being released which can continue after the session is complete for a brief period. Occasionally, you could feel tired, slightly lightheaded or have a headache which are considered detox symptoms as energy is being removed from the body. This is the body’s way of rebalancing and only lasts a short time. If detox symptoms occur, make sure to drink plenty of water or herbal teas, eat healthy food, take an epsom salt bath with essential oils and rest. It’s also beneficial to spend some quiet time within a few days of your session to journal or to contemplate as you might have some insights or mental clarity as your body continues to process the Reiki energy.
